Projects & Start-Ups
Here are a few simple, representive examples of Apative Innovation based projects and startups where the principles of Adaptive Innovation drove success.
Nexicor, LLC
Induction Heating
Adhesives Tapes & Hand Tools
Winner of the 2006 NSPE new product of the year award, Nexicor took assembly to a whole new level by shrinking an induction heater from a $2500 to $5000 a hundred pound piece of equipment to a small, hand held tool battery powered for a $50 manufacturing cost in volume. Used initially in carpet seaming, the technology is reversible, works with pre coated, pattern printed tapes that eliminate carpet peaking, cut repair times to less than 15 minutes and eliminate hot irons and thus cut injuries and insurance costs.
Applicable to a wide range of assembly types, especially in construction.
Appleton, Inc.
Pre-printed, die activated adhesives for packaging
At it's center were the linking of a company's core technological capabilities (encapsulation, converting and printing) with customer needs and desires not previously thought possible. Revolutionizing, over time, carton assembly for packaging, this new technology is truly transformative. Replacing hot melt adhesives, these reactive adhesives are pre-printed on die cut cartons and upon passing through a die, the encapsulated system is crushed, mixed and redeployed as a bead in fractions of a second right on the box. By eliminating hot melt adhesives and all the attendant maintenance, danger and complexity and the associated down time at over $300 a minute, a packaging revolution was at hand via a cooperative development with a top five food manufacturer.
Sirrus, Inc.
Fast, Energy Saving Chemistry for Advanced Manufactiring
An award winning start-up twice named recently as a Best Place to Work in Cincinnati, this company delivers advanced manufacturing through chemistry via high speed curing and energy elimination. No heat and high speed means transformed manufacturing. For automakers, that's a 60% reduction in an automotive plant's costs to build and operate for painting alone and that's why a Big 3 automaker invested. We attracted nearly $30 million in financing in one of the toughest environments in years. Take a look - www.sirruschemistry.com
This start-up is derived directly from our Adaptive Innovation principles.
RS Marketplace
Novel, application focused technology transfer market
Technology transfer is often too focused upon the technology itself and the overly technical, un-contexted presentation of its specifications and data. Most technology seekers and acquirers are running businesses and are seeking simple, clear solutions to customer challenges and opportunities, not technology for it's own sake. Relevant Solutions Marketplace is right now revolutionizing technology transfer by translating technologies into clearly applied solutions ready for deployment into specific applications with clear costs, specifications and timing. Once the product offering is clear, a single technology becomes ten products ready to commercialize and sell. Watch soon as the first lead universities and research institutions launch with us!
